Which NC state inspection does your vehicle need?

Most vehicles registered in North Carolina need an annual safety inspection before registration renewal. An emissions test is also required for eligible vehicles registered in counties covered by the state’s emissions program.

The county where your vehicle is registered, along with its model year, mileage, and fuel type, helps determine which inspection applies.

Keep up with transfer-case, differential, and hub maintenance. Our team checks related components for wear, fluid leaks, and operating problems and discusses any recommended work.

Axles, differentials, and driveshafts transfer power to the wheels. We inspect and service these components when leaks, unusual noises, or vibration suggest a drivetrain concern.

Trouble starting or keeping the battery charged may involve more than the battery itself. We test the starting and charging systems to identify starter, alternator, or related faults.

Have a failed headlight, unreliable turn signal, or another lighting issue checked. We investigate the affected bulbs, wiring, and electrical components to determine the necessary repair.

What happens during a state inspection?

At Coastal Car Care, a licensed inspector checks the items North Carolina requires for your vehicle and explains the result before you leave.

Check the required safety items

The inspector looks at items such as your lights, brakes, tires, steering, windshield wipers, and exhaust.

Run the emissions test if required

The inspector connects to the vehicle’s onboard computer to check for emissions faults and see whether the required self-checks have run.

Review the result

If your vehicle doesn’t pass, we’ll show you which item caused the failure and explain what needs attention before you return for a reinspection.

What does a pre-purchase inspection cover?

A pre-purchase inspection gives you a clearer picture of a used vehicle’s condition before you commit. Coastal Car Care checks major systems such as the engine, transmission, brakes, steering, suspension, and electrical components. We also look for visible leaks and wear that could affect your repair budget.

Arrange the inspection with the seller before you finalize the purchase. We’ll walk you through what we find so you can decide whether to move forward, ask the seller about a repair, or keep looking.

How much does an NC state inspection cost?

A passing NC safety-only inspection costs $13.60. A passing inspection that includes both safety and emissions costs up to $30 under North Carolina’s fee schedule. The type of inspection your vehicle requires determines which fee applies.

Pre-purchase inspections are priced separately. Call Coastal Car Care for a quote on the vehicle you’re considering. If your state inspection points to a problem that needs diagnostic work or repair, we’ll explain the cost before you decide.

NC State Inspection & Emissions Testing FAQs

  • How early can I get my NC state inspection?

You can get your NC state inspection up to 90 days before your registration expires. Booking early gives you time to address a failed item before renewal is due.

  • Will my vehicle pass emissions with the check engine light on?

If your vehicle requires emissions testing, it will fail when the onboard computer has turned on the check engine light. Tell us about the light when you book so we can help you plan the inspection or discuss check engine light diagnostics.

  • Can a recent battery replacement affect my emissions test?

Yes. Disconnecting or replacing the battery can reset the vehicle’s emissions self-checks. If too many are still marked “not ready,” the emissions test can’t be completed. Let us know if you recently replaced the battery or had emissions work done.

  • Do I have to pay for a reinspection if my vehicle fails?

North Carolina allows a reinspection at the same station within 60 days of a failed inspection without another inspection fee. Any repairs needed to correct the issue are billed separately.

  • Is a pre-purchase inspection worth getting if the car just passed its state inspection?

Yes. A state inspection checks the items required for registration. A pre-purchase inspection gives you a broader look at the vehicle, including concerns such as fluid leaks or transmission problems that could affect what you spend after buying it.
